问吧乐享奖学金文章3 - My Experience in the Master of Financial Accountability Program

I am a master student at York University, majoring in Financial Accountability (MFAc). Many people misunderstand about my program and believe that it is about financial accounting. Actually, my program is not just about accounting, but it also incorporates management, information system, business law, ethics, and all other business aspects. This program emerged after 2008 financial crisis, becoming the only one program in the world which talks about corporate governance, financial transparency, risk management, managers' responsibilities, etc. I am very proud that I can study in the MFAc program because it gives me a good preparation to become a successful senior manager in the future.

The most important thing I learnt from my program is how to become an accountable manager. As a future corporate leader, I will need to maximize the profits of shareholders. Besides that, I will need to work for the interests of other stakeholders, such as improving corporate sustainability, meeting corporate social responsibility, increasing customers' satisfaction, and protecting employees' rights. Therefore, I should work towards the best interests of the company rather than my own interests. I will be responsible to my shareholders, employees, customers, local communities, etc. What I will do to achieve this goal is to establish an effective governance system, including a sound enterprise risk management, a useful executive compensation system, and a systematic internal control system.

But for now, in order to become a business leader, I need to learn as much knowledge as I can from my program. I think advance preparation is a crucial step to succeed in a class. I will read all required readings before each class. Each semester, I have almost 300 pages of readings every week for the 3 courses I enrolled. It is impossible to read the text sentence by sentence. What I do is to read the contents which are related to the course subjects or to read something which is related to professors' power point. Class participation not only helps foreign students improve communication skills, but also lets students understand class materials deeply. I actively participate in the class discussion and share some thoughtful ideas with my classmates. Although sometimes my opinions are incorrect, I am not be afraid to speak them up because it is the learning process. Since English is my second language, I need to edit my assignments twice in order to ensure that my paper has less errors. Thus, I always finish my assignments several days before the deadline in order to have enough time to check them. I will not wait to the last minute to do my homework, or I can not ensure the quality of my work.

As a business student, I need to have good networking skills. Some foreign students are afraid of talking to business leaders who are native speakers. I have similar experience when I communicated with a boss at the first time. At that time, I was an undergraduate student studying Accounting in the United States. I was so nervous that I almost forgot what I should say with that boss. In order to overcome this difficulty, I attended many career fairs and networking events where I had lots of opportunities to talk with business people. I also found a job in the school library where I learnt how to speak to supervisors and colleagues. Now, I am very confident about speaking in public and communicating with business persons.

If you have any questions with my program, feel free to contact me. I am willing to share my experience for the MFAc program.
